Magnification Ratio of the Fluctuating Light in Gravitational Lens
نویسنده
چکیده
Radio observations establish the B/A magnification ratio of gravitational lens 0957+561 at about 0.75. Yet, for more than 15 years, the optical magnfication ratio has been between 0.9 and 1.12. The accepted explanation is microlensing of the optical source. However, this explanation is mildly discordant with (i) the relative constancy of the optical ratio, and (ii) recent data indicating possible non-achromaticity in the ratio. To study these issues, we develop a statistical formalism for separately measuring, in a unified manner, the magnification ratio of the fluctuating and constant parts of the light curve. Applying the formalism to the published data of Kundić et al. (1997), we find that the magnification ratios of fluctuating parts in both the g and r colors agrees with the magnification ratio of the constant part in g-band, and tends to disagree with the r-band value. One explanation could be about 0.1 mag of consistently unsubtracted r light from the lensing galaxy G1, which seems unlikely. Another could be that 0957+561 is approaching a caustic in the microlensing pattern. Subject headings: gravitational lenses – quasars: individual: 0957+561

متن کاملMOA-2011-BLG-293Lb: A testbed for pure survey microlensing planet detections
Microlensing uses gravitational lensing of individual stars to detect planets. In a microlensing event, the light from one star, the “source”, is magnified by the gravitational field of another star, the “lens”. A microlensing event occurs when the paths of two stars on the sky pass very close to each other, typically less than 1′′ [An arcsecond (′′) is 1/3600th of a degree. It may be further d...
متن کاملStatistics of Gravitational Microlensing Magnification. I. Two-dimensional Lens Distribution
The propagation of light of distant sources through a distribution of clumpy matter, acting as point mass lenses, produces multiple images that contribute to the total brightness of the observed macroimages. In this paper we refine the theory of gravitational microlensing for a planar distribution of point masses. In the second accompanying paper, we extend the analysis to a three-dimensional l...
متن کاملGravitational Microlensing of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows by Single and Binary Stars
We calculate the magnification light curves due to stellar microlensing of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. A GRB source appears on the sky as a thin ring which expands faster than the speed of light and is maximally magnified as it crosses the lens caustics. While a single star lens produces a single peak in the magnification light curve, binary star lenses may produce multiple peaks. The sha...
متن کاملResolving Microlens Blends Using Image Subtraction
Blended light is an important source of degeneracy in the characterization of microlensing events, particularly in binary-lens and high magnification events. We show how the techniques of image subtraction can be applied to form an image of the blend with the source removed. In many cases, it should be possible to construct images with very high signal-to-noise ratio. Analysis of these images c...
